- Doctor Oz did a show on "Obesogens: The Chemicals You're
Eating That Make You Fat". I record the little bit of TV that I do
watch for several reasons, one you can fast forward through all the
commercials and two, you can delete a show if it doesn't look
interesting. Most of the time I like to see what Dr. Oz has to say, but
this particular show really got my attention. "Obesogens", what the
heck are "Obesogens?

Although I'd never heard of the name "Obesogen" before, when I found
out what they actually were, I realized that I've ranted about these
very things (endocrine disruptors) many times before. Simply put,
they're chemicals hidden in our food and in our homes that are making
people fat.

I was very happy to see this show not only because it has some very
useful info, but it was a great sign that some of the stuff we've been
talking about in the world of "Underground Wellness" is finally
starting to become mainstream. The AMA (American Medical Association)
and the NIH (National Institute of Health) and The White House Task
Force on Childhood Obesity have all declared "Obesogens" also know as
hormone disruptors as being hazardous to America's waistlines. And
that's where this stuff needs to be. Brought to the forefront so we can
get the word out and let people know that we're literally killing
ourselves one bite, one drink and one breath at a time.

Dr. Oz was joined by Dr. Robert Lustig a nationally-recognized
authority in neuroendocrinology with the specific emphasis on energy
balance by the nervous system and Stephen Perinne Men's Health Editor
at large and author of "The New American Diet" How Obesogens Are Making
Us Fat. If you haven't heard of either of these guys, you've got to
check out their work. Dr. Lustig's 89 min. YouTube video "Sugar the
Bitter Truth" is a must see and it looks like Stephen's book "The
New American Diet" should definitely be on the must read list too.

In a nut shell, "Obesogens" are natural or manmade chemicals that take
over our metabolic systems and cause us to gain unnatural amounts of
weight. These compounds are found in pesticides and fungicides on the
food we eat, sweeteners (like high-fructose corn syrup and sugar), soy,
the hormones injected into the animals that we eat and also in the air
that we breath. Chances are you're drinking, eating and breathing these
chemicals every day you don't even realize it. In fact Perinne says "
the obesogen bisphenal-A (BPA) was found in the bodies of 93% of
Americans and 75% of Americans have detectable amounts of Phthalates in
their urine.

Dr Oz says "Obesogens mimick the actions of naturally occurring
hormones in our bodies or preventing the hormones we produce from
acting correctly, endocrine disruptors can":
* Encourage the body to store fat and reprogram cells to become fat
cells.
* Prompt the liver to become insulin resistant, which makes the
pancreas pump out more insulin that turns energy into fat all over
the body.
* Prevent leptin (hormone that reduces appetite) from being released
from your fat cells to tell your body you are full."


Now that you're probably as freaked out as I was when I realized how
many of these chemicals I'm still probably being exposed to even though
I eat pretty damn clean there's a few important steps you can take to
help avoid obesogens.

* Install a granular activated carbon filter on your faucet to
filter out chemicals like atrazine.

* Stay away from packaged processed food as much as possible.

* Don't drink out of plastic bottles for hot or cold liquids.
Stainless steel or those that are BPA-free are best. Stay away from
the numbers 3 and 7. Numbers 1,2,4,5 and 6 are unlikely to contain
BPA's.

* Buy wild fish and meats that are hormone free and grass fed.

* Minimize your canned foods. Fresh or frozen is best. If you do buy
salmon or tuna in a can, try it in a pouch instead.

* Buy your meats from the butcher counter or farmers market. The
pre-packaged meats are wrapped in plastic that leaches into the
meat.

* Skip air fresheners. They're usually full of phthalates. Use
lavender, incense or open the windows instead.

* Get rid of your Teflon pans especially if they've got
scratches. Stainless steel, cast iron, glass and enameled cast iron
like "La Creuset" is best.


As Dr Oz said, "the chemicals we're exposed to today are not the ones
we grew up with." So we've got to roll with the times or continue to
watch our rolls around our middles grow. What do you think? Did you

The FDA approved two non-invasive belly fat body contouring
treatments. One called Zerona which claims to melt your fat away and
the other called Zeltiq which freezes fat cells and kills them.
Erchonia Corp. who makes Zerona, the low level cooling energy laser,
breaks down fat cells in the hips, waist and thighs where it's later
absorbed by the body. Zerona's effectiveness was documented on the
companies' website where participants in a double-blind , multi-site,
randomized and placebo-controlled study which patients on average lost
over 31/2 inches from their waist, hips and thighs. The results were
over 3 inches more than the placebo group lost. Not bad for just two
weeks of treatments.
The other machine called Zeltiq uses a gel patch and freezes the fat
cells so they self-destruct and then later are absorbed by the body
over several months. The Zeltiq procedure claims to reduce the fat
layer by 20-40%. Those are also pretty impressive results.
Both methods sound like easy fixes for those who aren't grossly
over-weight and if you take a look at the video clip below they even
recommend that these procedures are good for those who have only a
little bit more to lose.
Although it looks like both of these procedures seem to produce
results. I have to still stand firm on my belief in the old fashioned
get to the root of your weight issues, fix the problem and modify
behavior for LIFE approach. Plastic surgery body sculpting will only
be a quick temporary solution for most, especially if they go back to
their old eating, drinking and non-exercising habits. Even though
"this is a big deal" stated by Plastic Surgeon Lawrence Bass, "They
certainly don't replace diet and exercise, but they're another option
for a subset of patients that just need to take a little bit off." That
statement is also consistent with what's written on the Zerona website
" a healthy diet and exercise are always a great idea".
So I guess the moral of the story is...If you've got an extra couple
thousand bucks to experiment with, go for it. If not, stick to the
basics. Eat real food and get moving. And if you need some help with

- - Kim Kardashian and Madonna have something
more in common than being in the lime light. Both of these beautiful
celebrities have recently used some extra help in addition to diet and
exercise to remove some of their unsightly cellulite lumps and bumps.

Kim Kardashians secret's all over the web, including a video of her
undergoing the "Vela Shape" treatment to smooth out the cellulite on
her butt and thighs. Madonna's weapon of choice against cellulite
wasn't really disclosed other than the machine cost her about $75,000
bucks. These treatments may reduce the appearance of cellulite and
there's even some documented proof (of course it's by a plastic
surgeon) that laser treatments like these may be beneficial. However,
there's also quite a bit of evidence that suggests exactly the
opposite. In my opinion if it sounds too good to be true, it is.

There's hope though and a better, long lasting, more economical way to
remove those embarrassing dimples.

Here's the plan in a nutshell:

Clean up your eating. Nutrition is huge! Get rid of all the junk that
usually comes in a bag or a box. We really are what we eat. If we eat
Twinkies we can't expect to have a 6-pack. Eat "Real Whole Foods".
Get off your Butt. You've got to move and expend more energy than you
take in if you want to lose weight and cellulite. Get moving and pick
activities that you enjoy.

Get your Hormones in Balance. You may think you're doing everything
you're supposed to do and you're not getting the results you expect. It
may not be your fault. Locate a holistic physician (either a
Naturopathic Doctor or a Holistic Integrative MD) and test your
hormones. Once you know where you're at, then you can come up with a
plan re: what needs to be done to get back in balance. Here are a
couple of links that will help you locate a Holistic Integrative
Physician or Naturopathic Doctor in your area.

Eat more "Good Fats. Too many of us don't get enough daily omega 3
fatty acids. Eat wild seafood (salmon etc.) at least once a week and
maybe supplement your diet with a good quality fish oil. Not only are
these oils good for their anti-oxidant values, but recent research has
also shown that 3-5 grams of omega 3 fatty acids daily may
significantly increase your metabolism.
Don't use cheap oils either like: canola oil, vegetable oil, corn oil
etc. When cooking, use butter, organic coconut oil and organic extra
virgin olive oil.

Do some Strength Training. Strength or resistance training will not
only reduce your body fat percentage and help you lose those unwanted
lbs., but it will also help you increase your shapely lean muscle
tissue which will reduce the appearance of those unsightly lumps and
bumps. It will also help crank up your metabolism and help you burn
more calories than you take in. A win- win situation for sure.

Have Someone in Your Corner. Social support is a huge factor to Fat
Loss success. Your support team can be your spouse or significant
other, brother or sister, child, mom or dad, friend, neighbor,
co-worker, personal trainer, or lifestyle coach. Don't try to go it
alone.

Get SMART. I'm sure you've seen this little acronym before. It's
published in just about every goal setting, self help motivational
piece out there. I'm sure you've also heard this little saying...."If
you fail to plan you plan to fail"

Specific - What specifically do you want to do? Do you want to lose 5
inches off your waist? Do you want to lose 12 lbs of fat? Figure it
out? Write it down and it'll happen.

Measureable - Come up with a number. Just saying I want to lose weight
won't cut it.

Attainable - Choose a goal that's attainable. Set yourself up to
succeed.

Realistic - Kind of means the same thing as attainable. Be sure that
your goal is realistic and you're confident that you can reach it.

Time-bound - Set a deadline or finish line to your specific goal. For
example I'm going to lose 9 lbs of fat by June 1st. Give yourself an
end point.

Bag "Slow Cardio". There's so much confusion about Cardio training that
it's no wonder some folks get that paralysis by analysis syndrome and
wind up just not doing anything. The fact is, you must perform the type
of activity that you'd like to get good at in order to gain the most
benefit. In other words, if your goal is to be a marathon runner you
need to train like a marathoner, if you'd like to get better at
mountain biking, get on that mountain bike and if you want to get rid
of your cellulite and don't have a lot of spare time, "Cellulite
Circuits" or interval training's the way to go.
Take Those Kaizen Baby Steps. Focus on making slow gradual changes
toward your goal and before you know it you'll get there. Small gradual
lifestyle changes are not only doable but they stick.
